ALAMEDA -- Encinal High football coach Joe Tenorio gets right to the point when he talks about last season.

"It was a total rebuilding year," said Tenorio about the Jets' 7-6 campaign last year, in which his varsity squad included three freshmen and was hit hard by injuries. "Last year was so much about going out there and learning how to play varsity football. ... This year, I want results."

The Jets did win three of their last four games last season, with its offense averaging 26.3 points per game in the victories. Encinal returns junior quarterback Taivale Tautalatasi, who has been impressive this preseason, Tenorio said. The Jets also have junior quarterback Isaac Tapia, a transfer from Arroyo.

Encinal has three running backs who have looked great in practice this year -- sophomore Jordan Parker, senior Tyrell Carrigan and senior Isaiah Hunter. Wide receiver is a question mark for the squad, but tight end Kealii Pedro has been playing well this preseason. Left guard Matt Ferrer anchors the line.

Defensively, the Jets were very good during the West Alameda County Conference-Foothill Division season last year, allowing only 17.0 points per game in the team's 2-3 division campaign. Encinal's defense should be very capable again this year.

Defensive tackle Elijah Wilson anchors the line. "He is a legit stud high school lineman," said Tenorio about the 6-0, 290-pound senior. Austin Ve'e and Pedro lead the linebackers, and Parker is the leader in the defensive backfield.

Depth could be an issue for the Jets, who had only 20 players on their roster at press time. But the team has a large number of players who have starting or playing experience on the varsity team.

"I'd like to see us come out there and play like we've been there before," Tenorio said.

That would most likely produce the results that Tenorio would like to see.
