Sobriety checkpoint set for Friday
The El Cerrito Police Department will conduct a sobriety and driver's license checkpoint from 8 p.m. to 3 a.m. Aug. 30 at a location to be announced at the southern end of the city.
The checkpoint, part of an ongoing enforcement and education campaign by the department's traffic safety unit. is funded by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety.
Meeting on senior housing, florist building
A community workshop to discuss plans for a 63-unit affordable senior housing development at the former Tradeway site at 10860 San Pablo Ave. next to El Cerrito City Hall will be held at 6:30 p.m. Sept. 11.
The workshop in the City Hall council chambers, 10890 San Pablo Ave., will discuss and seek ideas on the building on the site that has been determined to be historic.
"At the meeting we would like to focus community input on ways to honor the history of the Contra Costa Florist building located on the site, the Japanese American community and their contribution to El Cerrito through the design of the community plaza, landscaping and other commemorative features," Eden Housing said in an announcement.
Community can provide input on library future
A town-hall meeting to discuss the future direction of the county library system and what it offers the community will be held at 7 p.m. Sept. 9 at El Cerrito City Hall, 10890 San Pablo Ave.
Meetings are being held in each community with a county branch to get local input on needs and desires as the system goes through its strategic planning process on how it can better serve its various communities.
The meeting also comes as El Cerrito Library boosters are promoting efforts to build a modern library facility in the city.

Albany holding paper dressmaking classes
A workshop series teaching paper dressmaking and incorporating storytelling will be held from 10 a.m. to noon Thursdays starting Sept. 12 to Oct. 17 and Nov. 7 to Dec. 19 at the Albany Community Center, 1249 Marin Ave.
Patricia Bulitt will lead the classes, hosted by the Albany Recreation Department and titled "Remembering My Grandmother's Honey Cake." Bulitt has been teaching the course for a number of years at locations such as the Berkeley Public Library, Rutgers University, the Museum of Glass in Washington state, Sun Gallery in Hayward and the Richmond Art Center.

City honored for financial reporting
El Cerrito has been awarded a "Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting" for by the Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada for its Comprehensive Annual Financial Report covering the last fiscal year.
This is the ninth straight year the city's financial reporting was honored. The CAFR is available online at www.el-cerrito.org/index.aspx?nid=232.
St. Mary's golf tourney registration starts
Registration is now open for Saint Mary's College High School's 29th Golf Invitational, the third Phil Doran Memorial Tournament, taking place Sept. 16 at the Richmond Country Club.
The $225 entry fee includes men's, women's, and senior flights; a barbecue lunch; and the 19th Hole silent auction, raffle, and reception. Sponsorships are also available and proceeds benefit the school's tuition assistance program.

Contra Costa Chorale to begin rehearsals
The Contra Costa Chorale and Orchestra has begun rehearsals for its fall concert, Masters of the Baroque. The nonprofit chorus is "open to singers of various ages, backgrounds, and musical experience."
Rehearsals, led by Cindy Beitman,are 7 to 9:30 p.m. Mondays, with special rehearsals such as sectionals from 9:30 to 10 p.m., at Hillside Community Church, 1422 Navellier St. in El Cerrito.
