Dozens of police dogs and their handlers took part in a "K-9 Competition" earlier in August hosted by the Alameda and San Leandro police departments.

The two-day event featured a closed narcotics competition in San Leandro on Aug. 2 and an open obedience and obstacle competition at Alameda Point the next day. The competition drew about 31 K-9 teams to the San Leandro venue and 36 teams to the Alameda venue, including some from law enforcement agencies in Clear Lake, Fresno and Bakersfield, as well as the U.S. military. Proceeds benefited the K-9 Officer Kevin Tonn Foundation. Tonn was killed Jan. 15 in the line of duty in the city of Galt.
