The Alameda County Juvenile Probation Department is reviewing the case of the teenage boy accused of making up a story that gunshots were fired in the city's West End, which led officers to briefly shut down two schools.

The boy, whose name was not disclosed because he is a minor, admitted that he had fabricated the story, police said. He allegedly told investigators that he had received second-hand information about gunshots fired near Island High School on Third Street, which caused a brief lockdown at the campus and nearby Ruby Bridges Elementary School.

The boy provided the account shortly after 8 a.m. Sept. 11, saying he understood the shots were fired in the 1900 block of Third Street and that the suspect was last seen running toward Ruby Bridges on Jack London Avenue, police said.

The lockdown was lifted at the two schools after about an hour.

It was unclear what prompted the boy to fabricate the story about the gunshots, police said.
