With Matt Sweeney, Foothill High's football coach, and Greg Haubner, the coach at Livermore, both social studies teachers at Foothill, it would seem like a perfect week for a little back-and-forth banter. After all, Haubner's Cowboys (2-2) are traveling to Foothill (4-0) on Friday to kick off the East Bay Athletic League season.

Talk about an interesting reality for Haubner, a former Falcons assistant coach. He'll be very much at home on the road at Foothill's homecoming game.

"You feel the excitement of the homecoming stuff going and realizing they have their sights set on beating us and taking it to us, and it's a very unique position to be in as far as being a teacher on campus at Foothill but coaching Livermore," Haubner said. "But I enjoy the kids at both schools, and I love coaching, so I'm looking forward to Friday night as much as anybody else."

Win or lose, Haubner will know just about everybody on the field.

WILDCATS PROWLING: The Dougherty Valley football team remains on the prowl under coach Nick Tisa.

One year after going winless, the Wildcats (3-1) continued their 2013 Revenge Tour with a wild 34-30 victory over Antioch on Sept. 20.

Michael Pangelinan ran for 201 yards on just 16 carries and scored the game-clinching touchdown on a 65-yard run. Impressive footnote: The Wildcats are 2-0 with Calvin Montano starting in place of injured signal-caller Umar Farooq, who looked very good early against College Park in Sept. 6 before going down.

Instead of using the loss of Farooq as an excuse to backslide, the Wildcats have soldiered on.

Dougherty Valley has a bye this week before opening Diablo Foothill Athletic League play at rival Dublin on Oct. 4.

Dublin (2-2), which has never lost to Dougherty Valley in varsity football, walloped Ygnacio Valley 37-0 last week to prepare for a tough DFAL opener against host Miramonte (3-1) on Sept. 27.

MONTE VISTA STAR LANDS WITH ASU: Monte Vista senior Brendan Landman, a two-way standout lineman, has orally committed to Arizona State. He will join fellow 2014 ASU commit and former San Ramon Valley Thunderbirds teammate Das Tautalatasi of De La Salle in the Pac-12 next fall.

Landman, a 6-foot-6 and 230-pound senior, was an all-league EBAL baseball player in 2013. He is unique in that he was born in Zimbabwe, Africa, before his family relocated to Danville when he was 6 years old.

DE LA PENA ROLLS ON: San Ramon Valley senior Marcus de la Pena was headline material in the Wolves' 67-36 loss to powerful Folsom on Sept. 20. De la Pena, who has an offer from Wyoming, ran for 201 yards on 26 carries, with his normal tackle-breaking runs.

Moveover, the Wolves' robust offensive line had the Bulldogs, ranked No. 3 in the state, on their heels.

"Big time," San Ramon Valley coach Mark Kessler said of his offense. "And against a tough defense. That defense in the EBAL, those guys are going to hurt some people, and our guys did a fantastic job with being able to do both pass and run. It was nice being able to watch them have that success."

Of course, Folsom quarterback Jake Browning stole the show throwing for 596 yards and eight touchdowns.

"This kid's probably been doing that since the third grade with the same kids and in the same offense," Kessler said of Browning. "Their youth sports teams wear the same uniforms and are in the same colors, in all honesty. They did a fantastic job. He's a heck of a quarterback."
