Have you bought your After The Ball ticket yet? The fun event is Friday evening at Rock Wall Wine Company. All proceeds will benefit the homeless pets at Friends of the Alameda Animal Shelter. Trapeze artists, stilt walkers, great food and wine await you!

There are some fantastic auction items to bid on, including seven Hawaiian nights in a Maui condo, custom dog houses, round-trip tickets to anywhere Southwest Airlines flies, a special cooking class for six, a chance to create and name your own ice cream flavor at Tuckers and a Channel 7 tour and meet-and-greet with Weatherman Mike Nicco. To buy your ticket, please come to Rock Wall Wine Company at 7 p.m. Friday. Tickets are $100 at the door.

There are many ways to support the homeless pets at the animal shelter. A good way to do this is to license your pet. All dogs and cats living in Alameda are required to be licensed, and all proceeds help the shelter animals. License fees for spayed/neutered dogs and cats range from $10 to $20. Unaltered pet licenses range from $50 to $70. The fees from one license will buy cat litter or special diet food or toys to entertain the cats and dogs in the shelter. For a small amount of money, you can follow the law while helping homeless pets. It's a win-win deal for everyone!

Licensing your pet also ensures it is returned to you if it wanders away from your home. The vast majority of dogs and cats that arrive at the Alameda Animal Shelter have no identification at all, and most are never reclaimed by their owners. We know that most have had loving homes because the pets are well cared for, friendly and looking very lost. If they were licensed, we'd be on the phone to their owners in a heartbeat, and the pet would go home right away! To learn more about licensing your pet, please call the shelter at 510-337-8565.

The pet photo contest ends Monday at 11:59 p.m.! Get your pet entered or those last votes in for your favorite pet to be on the 2014 FAAS Calendar. To enter the contest, or vote, visit the website at www.360photocontest.com/217.
