BERKELEY -- The host St. Mary's High football team jumped out to a 49-point lead after one quarter and cruised to a 70-0 nonleague win over De Anza on Sept. 28. The Dons (1-3) chose to allow a running clock for the final three quarters.
Lorenzo Logwood rushed for 129 yards and three touchdowns for St. Mary's (3-1). Panthers teammate Tamarick Pierce rushed for 100 yards and a score on just five rushes. On one of those, late in the third quarter, Pierce gave up a sure touchdown by sliding to the ground.
"It never feels good to be on the other end," Pierce said. "But when you get on this end, you want to make sure that you don't do too much, or get out of your game. But it never feels good on the other side. I try to show as much sportsmanship as I can."
The Panthers' defense was dominant, forcing six turnovers and returning three of them -- two interceptions and one fumble -- for scores in the first quarter. Another interception return for a touchdown was called back on a penalty. De Anza had minus-6 yards of total offense on the day -- minus-4 rushing and minus-2 passing.
