SJND, Alameda's Tu impress at invite Led by Gabe Arias-Sheridan, the St. Joseph Notre Dame High boys cross country team swept the first four places in the Division V boys race at the Stanford Invitational on their way to a team title on Sept. 28. Arias-Sheridan won the race in 16 minutes, 12 seconds for the 3.1 mile course at Stanford Golf Course, followed by Michael Murphy (16:39), Matthew Murphy (16:40) and Cooper Teare (16:41). The Pilots' fifth scorer was Gavin Hill (17th, 17:41), as St. Joseph Notre Dame had an outstanding team score of 24. Alameda's Cameron Tu was second in the Division II boys race (15:58).
College Prep stays undefeated with win The College Prep High girls volleyball team remained undefeated in the Bay Counties League-East with a 25-10, 25-8, 25-10 victory over Athenian on Sept. 27. Haley Bitzer slammed nine kills and had three blocks, and teammates Jane Buckley and Lucy Moradian added eight kills apiece for the Cougars.
Berkeley volleyball beats Piedmont The Berkeley High girls volleyball team won an important match over Piedmont on Sept. 26. The Yellowjackets improved to 4-0 in the West Alameda County Conference with a 25-13, 26-24, 25-18 victory over the Highlanders, who fell to 2-2 in conference play. Berkeley freshman Roxie Wilbin had eight kills in the second set and 14 overall for the Yellowjackets, who rallied from a 23-21 deficit in the second set.

Alameda at Encinal, football, Oct. 4, 7 p.m. -- The host Jets have won the past six straight Island Bowls, but it took a last-minute touchdown last year to beat the Hornets 22-15. Berean Christian at St. Mary's, football, Oct. 5, 1:30 p.m. -- The Panthers will be looking to avenge a 25-21 loss to the Eagles last year.
Stars of the week Gabe Arias-Sheridan, St. Joseph Notre Dame boys cross country -- The senior won the Stanford Invitational Division V boys race by 27 seconds on Sept. 28 as he led his squad to the team title. Keelan Doss, Alameda football -- Doss caught eight passes for 217 yards and three touchdowns offensively, and defensively he returned an interception 90 yards for a touchdown, forced and recovered a fumble and had four tackles in the Hornets' 55-24 win over Hillsdale-San Mateo on Sept. 27. Jordan Parker, Encinal football -- Parker produced both of the Jets' touchdowns in a 14-7 win over Vallejo on Sept. 27. The sophomore returned a punt 60 yards for a touchdown in the first half and scored on a 66-yard run in the fourth quarter. Keilan Benjamin, El Cerrito football -- Benjamin completed 11 of his 19 passes for 192 yards and four touchdowns (all in the first half) of a 49-7 victory over Valley Christian-Dublin on Sept. 28. Kaelli Thiel, Piedmont girls tennis -- In No. 1 singles matches last week, Thiel defeated Miramonte's Taylor James 5-7, 6-2, 10-5 and Berkeley's Cara Chinn 6-1, 6-0.
