Study session on University Village
A public hearing on the University Village mixed-use development at 1030-1130 San Pablo Ave. at Monroe Street in Albany will be held by the city's Planning and Zoning Commission at 6:30 p.m. Oct. 9 at City Hall, 1000 San Pablo Ave.
The project calls for a 27,000-square-foot grocery, 17,000 square feet of additional retail space and a 175-unit senior housing complex on the 6.3-acre project site. The study session will examine the latest design revisions to the senior housing project and grocery store plans, which can be reviewed online at www.albanyca.org/index.aspx?page=521.
Art association sets three-day show
The 37th annual El Cerrito Art Association Show and Sale brings the local art scene to the Community Center, 7007 Moeser Lane, from 7 to 9 p.m.Oct. 4, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Oct. 5, and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Oct. 6. More than 350 works of art will be on display and will be many available for sale, including paintings, drawings, photographs, sculptures, prints, mixed media pieces and digital art pegged to the theme of Fall.
About 150 artists will be at the opening on Oct. 5 to meet with the community. The second day will feature an Artists Market with individual booths outside the center. Details: elcerritoart.org.
Citywide Garage Sale in El Cerrito

Church holding a blessing of pets event
Christ Lutheran Church, 780 Ashbury Ave. in El Cerrito, will hold a pet blessing at its 10 a.m. Oct. 6 service as the Festival of St. Francis of Assisi. Community members are invited to bring their pets to the blessing in the Fellowship Hall. For more details call 510-524-1050.
Childhood development presentation by author
Early childhood development expert and author Bev Bos will discuss her philosophy of living for the moment when it comes to our children at "Exploring the Real Power of Play" at 10 a.m. Oct. 5 in the auditorium at El Cerrito High School, 540 Ashbury Ave. El Cerrito. Doors will open at 9:30 a.m.
The presentation will focus on how children spontaneously engage in play, and it will include images of the Roseville Community Preschool environment. The format for the morning includes music, storytelling and the opportunity for participants to examine the power of real play from their own childhood and families. A short film, "Caine's Arcade," will be shown.
The workshop is sponsored by the El Cerrito Preschool Cooperative, a nonprofit co-op at 7200 Moeser Lane. Tickets are $12 in advance through brownpapertickets.com, or $15 at the door. College students and West Contra Costa Unified School District employees are $10. Group discounts are available. Adults only.
Albany Fire Department sets open house
The Albany Fire Department is again observing Fire Prevention Week by giving safety presentations at the city's elementary schools and hosting an open house event for the community. The department's Pancake Breakfast and Open House is set for 8 a.m. to noon at the fire station at 1000 San Pablo Ave. Breakfast is $7 adults and $4 children, with proceeds benefiting the Alisa Ann Ruch Burn Foundation.
Sparky the Fire Dog and Smokey Bear will be special guests and there will be raffles, live fire demonstrations, electrical and natural gas safety demonstrations, fire engines and equipment on display, and CPR and first-aid class sign-ups.
Open house to discuss San Pablo Avenue plan
El Cerrito is holding the second of three workshops on its San Pablo Avenue Specific Plan from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Oct. 19 at the Community Center, 7007 Moeser Lane. The session will be to "review and refine urban greening and bicycle and pedestrian strategies, learn more and provide input about the San Pablo Avenue Specific Plan and Complete Street designs." Still time to sign up for Albany Triathlon
The Albany Community Triathlon starts at 8 a.m. Oct. 5 and consists of a 400 m swim, a 10 km cycle and a 3 km run on the course at Albany High School and Memorial Park.
The beginner-friendly event promotes fitness and raises funds for Albany High sports.
