ALAMEDA -- Isaiah Hunter scored on a 1-yard run with 1 minute, 36 seconds left in the third quarter as the host Encinal High football team (4-1) won its seventh straight Island Bowl game 14-10 over Alameda on Oct. 4.
The Hornets (3-2) last won this rivalry game in 2006. Alameda still leads in the crosstown series, 31-26-2, but Encinal has won 16 of the last 24 games.
Alameda never really threatened after Hunter's score, running only eight plays in the last 13-plus minutes of the game. Encinal ran the last 14 plays with quarterback Taivale Tautalatasi taking a knee on the final two. Tautalatasi completed 5 of his 6 passes for 63 yards in the game.
Nick Chen kicked a 36-yard field goal with 4:54 left in the third quarter to give the Hornets a 10-7 lead, but Jordan Parker ran the ensuing kickoff back 60 yards to give the Jets good field position at the Alameda 30.
Six plays later, including a Hunter 10-yard run to the Alameda 2, Hunter produced what turned out to be the game-winning score. Hunter rushed for a game-high 105 yards on 20 carries in the game.
Alameda scored first with 4:33 left in the first quarter when quarterback Elijah Hernandez threw a 15-yard touchdown pass to Keelan Doss. Doss caught five passes for 59 yards in the game.
Encinal showed tenacity in tying the game after Hunter scored on a 6-yard run with 7:09 remaining in the half. The Jets drove 54 yards in 13 plays, converting three fourth-down situations, the last on Hunter's TD run.
Encinal will open its West Alameda County Conference-Foothill Division schedule on Oct. 11 with a road game at Bishop O'Dowd. The kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. Alameda begins WACC-Shoreline play on Oct. 11 at Sunset Field against Tennyson. The kickoff is also at 7 p.m.
