OAKLAND -- The Friends of Sausal Creek will hold their eighth annual native plant sale at Joaquin Miller Park from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday.
Native plants will be available for purchase, with native plant experts on hand to answer questions and to help shoppers pick what is appropriate for their gardens as well as to provide information about the benefits of planting native plants.
"It's a big misnomer that the sale raises money. It's not a fundraiser. It's a break-even enterprise. The goal of the event is to educate the public about native plants," said Kimra McAfee, executive director of Friends of Sausal Creek.
"A native habitat is an environmentally friendly way of gardening. Native plants in home gardens reduce the use of pesticides and herbicides and reduce fire hazards," McAfee said.
The group has a demonstration garden in Dimond Canyon near the Dimond Recreation Center. The show will feature many local native plants grown from seeds and cuttings collected from the watershed as well as other plants native to California to appeal to people's broader tastes.
"Even if your garden is full and you don't buy a single plant, there is something for everyone," McAfee said.
The event promises a carnival-like atmosphere with activities for the whole family.
Activities include lectures on environmental themes, fiddle music, face painting, "the spider chick and her live arachnids, the pollinator posse," live chicks, urban farming, and more.
Friends of Sausal Creek and the nursery are staffed largely by volunteers who devote about 10,000 volunteer hours a year. The organization began in 1996. Its focus is on the restoration of the area's habitats and environmental education. Removing invasive non-native plants to bring back the biodiversity of the area encourages more diverse bird species, McAfee said.
The Friends of Sausal Creek are working in a number of areas around Oakland, including Joaquin Miller Park, the Bridgeport trailhead and Dimond Canyon. For information about the event, visit www.sausalcreek.org.
