Piedmont defeats O'Dowd in girls tennis The Piedmont High girls tennis team swept the doubles matches on its way to a 5-2 victory over Bishop O'Dowd on Oct. 9. The Dragons' Yasmine McCroden and Jenna DeTurk won the No. 1 and No. 2 singles matches respectively, but Piedmont won the rest of the matches. The Piedmont doubles teams of Elizabeth Sweeney/Emily Kelleher, Claire O'Connor/Tess Olcott and Sydney Williams/Katie Yu all won in straight sets.
Berkeley volleyball squad sweeps match The Berkeley High girls volleyball team defeated Alameda in straight sets (25-11, 25-17, 25-13) on Oct. 10. Alexis Myrie produced eight kills and Dora Beilin added seven kills for the Yellowjackets. The Hornets were paced by Sophia Vetter (four blocks, three digs) and Janelle Ah-Hing (9 assists, 3 blocks, 3 digs).
Alameda dominates WACC golf tourney The Alameda High girls golf team swept the first five individual places en route to a team title at the West Alameda County Conference girls golf championships on Oct. 14. Alameda won its seventh straight league or conference championship, and it was the first time that Alameda swept the first five places in a league or conference tournament according to coach Stephen Burnett. Melissa Yao was the individual champion with a score of one-over 72 at the Chuck Corica Golf Complex's Jack Clark Course. Other Alameda scorers included Elizabeth Wong (75), Andrea Leung (76), Corine Tan (77) and Kenness Cheung (78).

Stars of the week Spencer Kim, Piedmont football -- Kim completed 13 of his 20 passes for 260 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions in a 33-22 victory over San Lorenzo on Oct. 11. Yasmine McCroden, Bishop O'Dowd girls tennis -- McCroden won No. 1 singles matches over Castro Valley (6-2, 6-0) and Piedmont (6-3, 7-6) in West Alameda County Conference matches last week. Travis Dennis, Berkeley football -- Dennis grabbed four receptions for 101 yards and scored all his team's points in a 14-0 victory over Hayward on Oct. 11. Dennis had touchdown receptions of 16 and 60 yards and also ran in a two-point conversion in the win. Adarius Pickett, El Cerrito football -- Pickett produced 154 yards rushing on just nine carries, including touchdown runs of 1, 43 and 4 yards, in the Gauchos' 41-0 victory over Berean Christian on Oct. 12. Isaiah Hunter, Encinal football -- Hunter rushed for a team-high 66 yards, including the game-winning 3-yard touchdown with 4 minutes, 3 seconds remaining in the game, in the Jets' 7-0 win over Bishop O'Dowd on Oct. 11. Melissa Yao, Alameda girls golf -- Yao won the WACC Tournament individual title with a score of one-over 72 at Chuck Corica Golf Complex's Jack Clark Course in Alameda on Oct. 14.
