Matadors eligible for NCS playoffs

  • Granada High's football team got the win it needed with a hot second quarter in a 42-21 East Bay Athletic League victory over Amador Valley on Nov. 1. The Matadors (5-4, 2-3 EBAL) have met the minimum standard for a berth in the NCS Division I playoffs, having clinched at least a .500 overall record. Granada game-breaker Javonn Williams had three touchdowns, including a 61-yard punt return for a score. Granada outscored the Dons 21-7 in the second quarter to break the game open. The Matadors will travel to rival Livermore on Nov. 7. Granada beat Livermore 35-3 in 2012, avenging a 37-14 loss to the Cowboys in 2011.

    Grizzlies clinch first outright EBAL title

  • The California football team clinched its first outright EBAL title with a 21-3 win over Livermore on Nov. 1. Grizzlies senior Blake Bierwith ran for 165 yards on 16 carries and two touchdowns. He has 1,339 yards and 21 touchdowns in nine games overall. Cowboys junior James Silva had 111 yards rushing, adding two receptions for 18 yards. California (8-1, 6-0 EBAL), which has only lost to Pittsburg 35-33, will travel to De La Salle on Nov. 8.

    Wolves' de la Pena shines vs. Foothill

  • San Ramon Valley's Marcus de la Pena ran for three touchdowns in the first quarter, helping the Wolves (5-4, 4-1 EBAL) to a 54-42 win over Foothill (7-2, 3-2) on Nov. 1. De la Pena ran for 162 yards on 30 carries and had five touchdowns. Matt Winaker passed for 214 yards, and J.J. Koski had five receptions for 112 yards. The Wolves will host rival Monte Vista (2-7, 1-4) on Nov. 8.

    Athenian rolls to league soccer title

  • The Athenian-Danville boys soccer team won the Bay Counties League-East tournament title with a 3-1 win over Head-Royce-Oakland on Oct. 31. Alex Kim scored twice for the Owls (14-3-2, 9-1), who will look to do some damage in the NCS Division II playoffs. Teammate Garrett Furlong also scored and Mark Dominguez made five saves in the win. The Owls also crushed Bentley 5-1 on Oct. 29 as Kim had two goals. Also scoring were Furlong, Michael Rodriguez and Anthony Aguilar.

    Mustangs top Falcons, claim EBAL tennis title

  • Depth paid off for the Monte Vista girls tennis team in a thrilling 5-4 win over Foothill in an EBAL showdown, which concluded on Nov. 1. The Mustangs clinched the league championship by sweeping three close doubles matches.

  • Granada at Livermore, football, Nov. 7, 7 p.m. -- The Cowboys are looking for their first league win this season against their rival Matadors.

  • Amador Valley at Foothill, football, Nov. 8, 7 p.m. -- The Dons and Falcons will look to rebound from losses in their annual Pleasanton showdown.

  • Monte Vista at San Ramon Valley, football, Nov. 8, 7 p.m. -- The Wolves are looking for their third straight win over their crosstown rivals.

  • Javonn Williams, Granada football -- He had three touchdowns, two on receptions and one on a 61-yard punt return, helping the Matadors beat Amador Valley 42-21.

  • Belinda Hu, Dougherty Valley golf -- The freshman shot a 3-under 68 and was a co-medalist with Amador Valley's Kimberly Liu at the NCS Division I Tournament of Champions on Oct. 28 in San Rafael.
