On Nov. 1, the San Leandro High football team used a dominating second half to clinch at least a share of the Western Alameda County Conference-Foothill Division with a 35-14 victory over Encinal at Burrell Field.
The Jets (7-2, 3-1 WACC-Foothill) will aim to get some momentum entering the North Coast Section playoffs when they play Hayward at Sunset Field on Nov. 8. The kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
On Nov. 1, Pirates junior quarterback Stephen Johnson overwhelmed the Jets defense with his arm and legs. He went 6 for 11 for 133 yards and two touchdowns, both of them to tight end Keone Foumai. Johnson also went over the century mark on the ground, running for 110 yards and two more scores.
Running back Isaiah Hunter had two touchdowns for Encinal, including a 13-yard run up the middle that gave the Jets a 14-7 lead in the second quarter. The Pirates (5-4, 4-0) tied the score before the end of the half when Johnson hit Foumai on a jump ball from the 9.
The second-half scoring was all Pirates as Johnson scored on a 2-yard keeper with 47 seconds left in the third for San Leandro's first lead of the night at 20-14.
San Lorenzo 14, Alameda 7: The visiting Hornets tied the game in the fourth quarter as Elijah Hernandez connected with Chris Wynn on a touchdown pass. But the Rebels returned an interception for a touchdown midway through the fourth quarter for the final score of the game.
Alameda (5-4, 2-2 West Alameda County Conference-Shoreline Division) held San Lorenzo (5-4, 3-1) under 100 yards of offense, but turned the ball over five times offensively in the loss. The Hornets will host Arroyo on Nov. 8 at 7 p.m.
