Gala celebration for USS Hornet on Nov. 16

The USS Hornet Museum will mark its 70th anniversary Nov. 16 with a gala celebration featuring Apollo astronaut Richard Gordon.

The day's festivities will also include a panel discussion with former crew members, including those who were aboard the aircraft carrier when it recovered Gordon and his fellow Apollo 12 astronauts, as well as when the ship recovered Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins following the first lunar landing.

Speakers are also expected to touch on the ship's role during World War II and the efforts to open it as a museum 15 years ago.

The anniversary ceremony and panel discussion will take place from 1 to 5 p.m.

The gala and fundraiser will take place from 6 to 11 p.m. Black-tie attire is requested and period attire is optional.

For information, go to http://www.uss-hornet.org/calendar/anniversary/ or call 510-521-8448, ext. 411. The USS Hornet is docked at 707 W Hornet Ave., Pier 3.
