Arias-Sheridan, Pilots win TCAL titles

  • Gabe Arias-Sheridan successfully defended his Tri-County Athletic League boys cross country championship title on Nov. 8, leading St. Joseph Notre Dame to the team title for the second straight year. Arias-Sheridan, a senior, won the 2.96 mile race at Point Pinole Regional Shoreline-Richmond with a time of 15 minutes, 4 seconds. The Pilots swept the top four places with Michael Murphy (second, 15:39), Matthew Murphy (third, 15:42) and Cooper Teare (fourth, 15:44). Christopher Melendez (seventh, 16:15) was St. Joseph Notre Dame's fifth scorer, as the Pilots came close to a perfect team score with a score of 17. Other local runners in the top 10 included St. Mary's Jovani Barajas (fifth, 16:01), Nabai Habtermariam (sixth, 16:06), Albany's Cameron Daly (eighth, 16:21) and St. Joseph Notre Dame's Willie Mein (ninth, 16:30).

    Piedmont falls to Mt. Eden in wild game

  • Despite 323 passing and rushing yards by Spencer Kim, the Piedmont High football team fell 69-58 to Mt. Eden on Nov. 9. Kim passed for 184 yards three touchdowns, and rushed for 139 yards and three touchdowns. Chad Finkel caught all three of Kim's touchdown passes and finished with eight catches for 163 yards. Piedmont (5-5, 3-2 West Alameda County Conference-Shoreline Division) is the No. 10 seed in the North Coast Section Division III playoffs and will travel to face No. 7 Moreau Catholic (5-5) on Nov. 16 in a first-round game at 7 p.m.

    Moore, St. Mary's win cross country titles

  • Spencer Moore won her fourth league individual cross country title to help St. Mary's High also claim the girls team crown at the Tri-County Athletic League championships at Point Pinole Regional Shoreline-Richmond on Nov. 8. Moore ran the 2.96-mile course in 18 minutes, 2 seconds for the victory. The Panthers had an impressive winning score of 22. Besides Moore, its other scorers were Chloe Jenkins (third, 19:09), Julia English (fourth, 19:38), Josie Smale (fifth, 20:00) and Isabel Havens (ninth, 20:24). Other local runners in the top 10 included Veronica Aguila of St. Joseph Notre Dame (second, 18:41), Annabel Driussi of Albany (seventh, 20:09) and Cailyn Sakrai of El Cerrito (eighth, 20:10).

  • Novato at Encinal, football, Nov. 16, 7 p.m. -- The Jets have won their opening-round North Coast Section playoff game the past six seasons.

  • Fort Bragg at St. Mary's, football, Nov. 16, 1 p.m. -- The Panthers are looking for its second North Coast Section Division IV opening-round playoff win in two years when it hosts the Timberwolves.

  • Piedmont at Moreau Catholic, football, Nov. 16, 7 p.m. -- The Highlanders' offense has proven to be an big weapon this season, but their defense will face a big challenge in Mariners running back Jason Hinton in this North Coast Section Division IV first-round game.

  • Gabe Arias-Sheridan, St. Joseph Notre Dame boys cross country -- Arias-Sheridan won his third league individual title in four years with a time of 15:04 for the 2.96 mile Point Pinole Regional Shoreline-Richmond course on Nov. 8 in the TCAL boys championship race.

  • Cameron Tu, Alameda boys cross country -- Tu won the West Alameda County Conference boys championship race with a time of 15:21.1 at Hayward High on Nov. 9.

  • Keilan Benjamin, El Cerrito football -- Benjamin completed eight of his 13 passes for 131 yards and three touchdowns, and also rushed for 46 yards in the Gauchos' 49-13 win over St. Patrick-St. Vincent on Nov. 9

  • Allison Chuang, Albany girls tennis -- The junior won each of her four singles matches in straight sets at the TCAL championships, and only allowed an opponent a game in the final (a 6-3, 6-2 win).

  • Spencer Moore, St. Mary's girls cross country -- Moore won the TCAL girls cross country championship race by 39 seconds with a time of 18:02 for the 2.96 mile Point Pinole Regional Shoreline-Richmond course on Nov. 8.

  • Derrick Purvis, Encinal football -- Purvis scored two touchdowns in the Jets' 41-21 victory over Hayward on Nov. 8.

  • Armand Shyne, Skyline football -- Shyne rushed for 115 yards on seven carries and scored a touchdown in the Titans' 14-0 victory over Castlemont on Nov. 9.

  • Kaelli Thiel, Piedmont girls tennis -- Thiel won the West Alameda County Conference-Foothill Division singles title with a 6-0, 6-0 victory in the finals.
