SJND girls edged by San Domenico The St. Joseph Notre Dame girls basketball team rallied from a 23-15 halftime deficit but couldn't claim the win in a 38-34 loss to San Domenico on Dec. 10. Melanie Shojinaga scored a team-high 11 points for the Pilots, who fell to 3-1 with the loss.
Piedmont boys defeat St. Vincent The Piedmont High boys basketball team outscored St. Vincent 33-22 in the second half on Dec. 10 to post a 54-39 nonleague victory. Sean Rodriguez led all Highlanders scorers with 17 points, and teammate Jordan Torio added 13 points. Joseph Powell scored nine points, grabbed 11 rebounds and had three steals for Piedmont
Three more wins for St. Mary's girls The St. Mary's High girls basketball team produced three nonleague wins last week to improve to 4-1 this season. It was capped by a 78-20 victory over Christian Brothers-Sacramento at the Elite Shootout on Dec. 14. Gabby Green scored 21 points, grabbed five rebounds and had seven steals for St. Mary's in the victory, and teammate Ma'Ane Mosley added 13 points. On Dec. 11, the Panthers dominated Skyline 75-26. St. Mary's had three double-digit scorers, led by Green with 15. Mikayla Cowling and Layla Ybarra-Harvey combined for 23 points and 15 rebounds in the win. On Dec. 10, St. Mary's beat host Sacred Heart Cathedral-S.F. 64-53. Cowling produced 20 points and 11 rebounds, and Mosley also had a double-double (16 points, 11 rebounds).
On deck Piedmont Invitational championship game, boys basketball, Dec. 21, 2:30 p.m. -- Host Piedmont will be aiming for this game, but it first will need to get past Berean Christian in the opening round on Dec. 19. Results of that game were not available at press time. The semifinals will be on Dec. 20. Berkeley at Pinewood-Los Altos Hills, girls basketball, Dec. 21, 7 p.m. -- The Yellowjackets travel to face an always-competitive Pinewood squad, which was undefeated at 6-0 entering this week. Alameda at Dublin, girls basketball, Dec. 21, 7 p.m. -- This nonleague game is a rematch of a North Coast Section Division II quarterfinal game last season, which Dublin topped Alameda 54-50.
Stars of the week DeJa Johnson-Ford, Alameda girls basketball -- Johnson-Ford was named MVP of the Lady Hornet Classic. She scored 13 points in a 50-43 win over Pittsburg in the championship game on Dec. 14, 15 points in the Hornets' 62-34 win over California on Dec. 12, and a game-high 21 points in a 67-46 win over College Park on Dec. 13. Tyrell Alcorn, El Cerrito boys basketball -- Alcorn scored 25 points and dished out seven assists in an 80-73 victory over Central-Fresno in the McDonald's Classic on Dec. 14. He also had 21 points in a 72-48 victory over Franklin-Stockton in the first round of the tournament on Dec. 11. Liam Godfrey, St. Mary's football -- Godfrey produced 13 receptions for 247 yards and two touchdowns in the Panthers' 49-21 victory over Folsom in the North Coast Section Division IV championship game on Dec. 14. Jordan Phills, Berkeley boys basketball -- The junior scored a game-high 31 points in the Yellowjackets' 83-63 nonleague win over Irvington on Dec. 14. Asha Thomas, Bishop O'Dowd girls basketball -- Thomas scored a team-high 13 points in the Dragons' 50-48 loss to Lynwood in the Elite Shootout on Dec. 14.
