Pilots win Sand Dune championship The St. Joseph Notre Dame High boys basketball team defeated St. Ignatius-S.F. 52-50 to win the championship game of the Leo LaRocca Sand Dune Tournament on Dec. 28. Temidayo Yussuf scored a game-high 28 points for the Pilots in the win. St. Joseph Notre Dame also beat Burlingame 59-54 in a semifinal matchup on Dec. 27. Yussuf again had game-high scoring honors with 22 points, and teammate Lamont Banks added 14 points.
Gauchos advance to championship The El Cerrito High boys basketball team advanced to the championship game of the Hardwood Hoops Invitational with a 64-60 victory over Central-Fresno on Dec. 28. The Gauchos had three scorers in double figures, led by Tyrell Alcorn with 18 points. Sayeed Pridgett added 14 points, 10 rebounds and three assists for El Cerrito, and teammate Anthony Sullen had 13 points. In the quarterfinals on Dec. 27, El Cerrito defeated Rancho Verde-Moreno Valley 52-38 being a team-high 19 points by Jovontae Carleton. In the first round on Dec. 26, Carleton led four Gauchos in double figures with 16 points as El Cerrito beat Cleveland-Reseda 80-38. Results of the championship game between El Cerrito and Sacramento on Dec. 30 were not available at press time.
Tech edged in Jamboree opener The Oakland Tech High girls basketball team was edged by Bishop Manogue-Reno 50-49 in the first round of the West Coast Jamboree's Diamond Division on Dec. 27 at Deer Valley High. Elayshia Woolridge scored a game-high 23 points and teammate Alaysia Clemons added 15 points in the game, in which Tech had a 34-29 lead entering the final quarter. Tech also lost 72-50 to Brea-Olinda on Dec. 28 and Deer Valley won the consolation championship over Oakland Tech 70-34 on Dec. 30.
On deck Piedmont at Alameda, girls soccer, Jan. 8, 6 p.m. -- Two traditionally-strong programs face each other in a West Alameda County Conference game.
Stars of the week Destiny Kelly, Encinal girls basketball -- Kelly scored 25 points in a 66-58 overtime loss to Sheldon in the first round of the West Coast Jamboree's Coral Division at Ygnacio Valley High on Dec. 27. She then produced 14 points in a 47-24 win over Ripon on Dec. 28 at Ygnacio Valley in a consolation semifinal game. Tyrell Alcorn, El Cerrito boys basketball -- Alcorn scored a team-high 18 points in the Gauchos' 64-60 victory over Central-Fresno in a semifinal game of the Hardwood Hoops Invitational on Dec. 28. Desire Finnie, Berkeley girls basketball -- Finnie scored 11 points and pulled down nine rebounds in an 86-49 loss to St. Mary's-Stockton in the first round of the West Coast Jamboree's Platinum Division at Las Positas College on Dec. 27. Paris Austin, Bishop O'Dowd girls basketball -- Austin scored 21 points in a 68-52 victory over O'Dea-Seattle at the Under Armour Holiday Classic on Dec. 26. He also produced 18 points in a 70-67 overtime loss to The Patrick School-Elizabeth, N.J. on Dec. 28. Elayshia Woolridge, Oakland Tech girls basketball -- Woolridge produced a game-high 23 points in a 50-49 loss to Bishop Manogue-Reno in the first round of the West Coast Jamboree's Diamond Division on Dec. 27 at Deer Valley.
