As we move into 2014, Friends of the Alameda Animal Shelter is taking a moment to reflect on the many success stories of 2013 and animal lives saved. Below are a few staff favorites.

DORI & MATISSE were the two grande damme felines at the shelter for a long time. Both were in their golden years and had significant medical issues needing careful monitoring and daily care. In the past few months these two lovely ladies have found their forever homes with two FAAS volunteers who felt Dori and Matisse should live out their golden years in comfortable homes.

EBON arrived at the shelter last spring as a tiny kitten. During his time in foster care, there was an accident, and this poor little guy broke his leg. Unfortunately, the leg had to be amputated and Ebon became a three-legged whirling dervish of energy. His adopter reports that Ebon is not slowed down at all by being a three-legged cat.

WINSTON (now Poundcake) was abandoned in front of the shelter last spring with another small dog. He was a very shy and fearful little guy but had this endearing smile that melted people's hearts. As his shyness subsided, we found him the perfect home where he is adored.

MR. WRINKLES was picked up by the side of the road and rushed to a veterinarian due to his major injuries. At first, everyone thought he'd been hit by a car, but his injuries were due to very severe bites. This very handsome and sweet Shar-Pei had probably been used as a bait dog for a dog fighting ring and then dumped. Mr. Wrinkles spent some time at the shelter recovering from his injuries and then went home for a new life of love.

These are a few stories of the approximately 1,000 animals helped by the Alameda community in 2013. We could not do the work we do to shelter our city's homeless animals and find them new homes without community support. As we start our third year of operating the Alameda shelter, we thank you for the support you have given us. Because of you, FAAS is looking forward to a busy 2014 of saving even more animal lives.
