Clutch shot lifts Skyline to win

  • Darrien Washington hit a game-winning 3-pointer in overtime to left the Skyline High girls basketball team to a 43-41 victory over Wilcox-San Jose on Jan. 18. Washington finished with a game-high 27 points, 10 rebounds and four blocks in the victory. The Titans didn't allow Wilcox more than 11 points in any quarter, as Skyline improved to 11-5 overall.

    Encinal improves to 3-0 in WACC play

  • The Encinal High girls basketball team improved its West Alameda County Conference-Shoreline Division record to 3-0 with a 57-50 victory over Tennyson on Jan. 17. Destiny Kelly scored a game-high 30 points, including a trio of 3-pointers, in the victory.

    El Cerrito boys soccer team continues run

  • The El Cerrito High boys soccer team won its ninth straight game with a 6-0 victory over Salesian on Jan. 16 in a Tri-County Athletic League-Rock Division game. Luis Moreno, Brandon Sako and freshman Kevin Navarrete all scored three goals in the victory. The Gauchos held a 4-0 lead at halftime.

  • Berkeley at Piedmont, girls basketball, Jan. 24, 7 p.m. -- This is an important game for both teams, as far as their West Alameda County Conference-Foothill Division title hopes are concerned. Both have 2-1 WACC-Foothill marks entering this week.

  • El Cerrito at St. Joseph Notre Dame, boys basketball, Jan. 24, 7 p.m. -- On Jan. 8, the Pilots beat the Gauchos 55-49, handing El Cerrito its only loss of the season at press time.

  • Carondelet vs. St. Mary's at Bentley, girls basketball, Jan. 25, 6:30 p.m. -- The Panthers end a busy week of matchups with a game against another Bay Area powerhouse.

    Stars of the week

  • Kesy Platt, Piedmont girls soccer -- Platt, a senior, produced six saves in a 2-1 victory over San Leandro on Jan. 17 and eight saves in a 0-0 tie with Mt. Eden on Jan. 15.

  • Ivan Rabb, Bishop O'Dowd boys basketball -- Rabb produced a triple-double with 27 points, 11 blocks and 10 rebounds, and also dished out five assists in the Dragons' 80-74 WACC-Foothill game against Berkeley on Jan. 17. He also had 31 points, 10 rebounds and five blocks in Bishop O'Dowd's 86-60 rout of Capital Christian-Sacramento on Jan. 20 at the MLK Classic at Cal's Haas Pavilion. He also had 16 points, 11 rebounds and seven blocked shots in a 89-36 victory over Mt. Eden.

  • Darrien Washington, Skyline girls basketball -- Washington buried a game-winning three-pointer in overtime to lift the Titans to a 43-41 nonleague victory over Wilcox-San Jose on Jan. 18. She scored a game-high 27 points and also had 10 rebounds and four blocks. In an 82-16 win over Fremont on Jan. 17, Washington produced a game-high 19 points and also had 12 rebounds in an 82-16 win over Fremont in Oakland Athletic League action on Jan. 17.

  • Luis Moreno, El Cerrito boys soccer -- Moreno, a senior midfielder, scored two of El Cerrito's first three goals in a 6-0 win over Salesian on Jan. 16.

  • Jaiamoni Welch-Coleman, Berkeley girls basketball -- Welch-Coleman scored a game-high 18 points in the Yellowjackets' 53-38 WACC-Foothill victory over Alameda on Jan. 15.

  • Destiny Kelly, Encinal girls basketball -- Kelly produced a game-high 30 points in the Jets' 57-50 victory over Tennyson on Jan. 17, and also had a game-high 24 points in a 54-40 victory over San Lorenzo on Jan. 15 in a pair of WACC-Shoreline games.
