Piedmont High, PMS holding winter concert

Piedmont High and Piedmont Middle School will hold a winter concert at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at Wildwood Elementary School auditorium, 301 Wildwood Ave. in Piedmont.

Featured will be jazz pieces such as "The Girl from Ipanema" and "Fly Me to the Moon," directed by Andria Mullan with a guest appearance by Piedmont Middle's new eighth-grade jazz combo. The suggested donation for adults is $5; students' admission is free.

Students collecting for typhoon relief drive

Piedmont High students are collecting baby diapers, infant formula and Pedialyte in powder form to aid Philippine families suffering from Typhoon Halyan.

There is a collection bin in the PHS library and donations will be accepted through Friday. For questions, contact phs.typhoonrelief@gmail.com.

Missing Piedmont woman found dead

Officials said Jan. 16 that a 72-year-old woman missing from Piedmont was found dead in a San Francisco hotel room.

Although it was initially reported that the woman was found safe, a spokesman for the Office of the San Francisco Medical Examiner said Jill Reese was found dead about 10 a.m. Jan. 15 at a hotel in the 700 block of Market Street. The spokesman said a cause of death is pending.

The name of the hotel was not released and circumstances surrounding her death were also not released.

San Francisco police spokesman Officer Gordon Shyy said police are not investigating the death as a homicide.

Reese was last seen at 11 a.m. Jan. 14 leaving her Piedmont home, driving a 2013 gray Lexus RS 350, police said. Reese did not show up for an appointment in Orinda on Jan. 14 and did not return home by 5 p.m. as expected, police said.

Viva el Espanol to host movie night on Jan. 31

Piedmont Language School and Viva el Espanol will host a movie night from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Jan. 31.

"Despicable Me 2" and "Mi Villano Favorito" in Spanish will screen at Piedmont Community Church's Boy Scout classroom at 400 Highland Ave., Piedmont.

Scouts' annual Pinewood Derby slated for Feb. 8

The Girl Scouts annual Pinewood Derby is coming up from 3 to 6 p.m. Feb. 8 at Piedmont Community Church, 400 Highland Ave. in Piedmont.

The deadline to register is Jan. 26. Girl Scouts and their siblings can make race cars to win prizes in this fun event. Non-Girl Scouts are also welcome. To register and for car kits, contact Eliza Chin at elizachin_md@yahoo.com.

The Piedmont Cub/Tiger Scout Pinewood Derby will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the church also on Feb. 8. Volunteers are needed for registration, judges, pit crew and other. For more information, call the council office at 547-4493.

'Between Two Worlds' to be shown at Kehilla

Kehilla Synagogue is hosting an informative film on Saturday.

The film will screen at 7 p.m. at Kehilla, 1300 Grand Ave., Piedmont. Admission is free for Kehilla members; for the general public, a suggested donation of $5 to $10 is requested. "Between Two Worlds," on Jan. 25, is a documentary and a candid look at the way the American Jewish community has been bitterly divided over attitudes toward Israel and Jewish identity.
