Dragons improve to 5-0 in WACC play

  • The Bishop O'Dowd girls basketball team took a 32-13 lead into halftime on its way to a 59-32 victory over Castro Valley on Jan. 24. The Dragons, who improved to 15-3 overall and 5-0 in the West Alameda County Conference-Foothill Division, received a game-high 18 points from Asha Thomas and 12 points from Aisia Robertson in the victory.

    Hornets start fast in win over Highlanders

  • The Alameda High girls basketball team produced four double-figure scorers in a 66-50 victory over Piedmont on Jan. 25. The host Hornets took a 21-12 lead over the Highlanders in the first quarter on their way to the victory. Maddy Lewis led Alameda in scoring with 19 points, and teammates Lisa Bertholdt (16 points), Elizabeth Wong (10 points) and Tatianna Kelly (10 points) also scored in double figures. Lauren Seyranian led Piedmont with 24 points.

    Car to be given away in Alameda raffle

  • A 2014 Toyota Corolla will be given away at halftime of the girls basketball game at Alameda High on Jan. 31. The tip-off for the game is 7 p.m. In addition, it is Youth Night -- all youth basketball players who show up in uniform will get in free. Adults will be required to pay for admission.

    Gauchos outlast Pilots in OT

  • The El Cerrito High boys basketball team overcame a fantastic shot by St. Joseph Notre Dame's Temidayo Yussuf at the end of regulation to defeat the Pilots 71-64 in overtime on Jan. 24. Yussuf buried an 80-foot shot at the buzzer after a rebound to tie the score at 61. But El Cerrito dominated the overtime to avenge its only loss of the season at press time (55-49 to the Pilots on Jan. 8). Anthony Sullen scored a team-high 22 points, including a trio of 3-pointers, and El Cerrito teammate Jovontae Carleton added 17 points and eight rebounds. Yussuf scored a game-high 30 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for St. Joseph Notre Dame.

  • Castro Valley at Bishop O'Dowd, girls soccer, Feb. 5, 6 p.m. -- Two of the top programs in the East Bay will face each other for the second time this season. On Jan. 18, Bishop O'Dowd defeated Castro Valley 2-0.

  • St. Joseph Notre Dame at Salesian, boys basketball, Feb. 5, 6 p.m. -- The visiting Pilots will try to avenge a 57-44 loss to the Pride on Jan. 17.

  • Lauren Seyranian, Piedmont girls basketball -- Seyranian scored a game-high 24 points in the Highlanders' 66-50 loss to Alameda on Jan. 25.

  • Asha Thomas, Bishop O'Dowd girls basketball -- Thomas produced a game-high 18 points in a 59-32 victory over Castro Valley on Jan. 24.

  • Don Augustine, Encinal boys basketball -- Augustine scored a game-high 30 points and grabbed 16 rebounds in the Jets' 69-59 victory over Piedmont on Jan. 24.

  • Mikayla Cowling, St. Mary's girls basketball -- Cowling scored a game-high 23 points and had 12 rebounds in the Panthers' 78-71 victory over Carondelet on Jan. 25. She also produced 18 points in an 84-26 win over Pinole Valley on Jan. 24, a team-high 20 points (including nine in the fourth quarter) of a 64-63 loss to Salesian on Jan. 22, and 19 points in a 58-55 loss to Windward-Los Angeles on Jan. 20.

  • Maddy Lewis, Alameda girls basketball -- Lewis scored a team-high 18 points, including an 11 for 13 performance from the free throw line, in the Hornets' 66-50 victory over Piedmont on Jan. 25.
