Sexual assault reported at UC Village

A UC Berkeley female student was sexually assaulted at a campus housing unit in Albany over the weekend, police said.

Police responded to a hospital on Sunday to investigate a report of a sexual assault that occurred the previous night at Albany Village, according to university police.

The victim said she was invited to an off-campus bar by a male acquaintance, authorities said. Afterward, the man took the victim to an apartment at Albany Village and sexually assaulted her, police said.

The suspect has not been arrested. He is described as a Hispanic male, 40 years old, about 5 feet 7 inches and weighing approximately 170 pounds.

Cajun and Zydeco at Community Center

Band Night at the Albany Community Center, 1249 Marin Ave., presents Cajun, Creole and Zydeco music by local band Le Amis at 6:45 p.m. Jan. 31.

Police holding coffee get together

Coffee with Cops is an outreach program that "provides citizens the opportunity to meet and talk with an El Cerrito police officer in a less formal manner, with a relaxing cup of coffee. This is a chance for citizens to talk with the officer patrolling their neighborhood and exchange ideas."

Children's program at El Cerrito Library

El Cerrito trail group hosting free outings

Jenny Hammer of the El Cerrito Trail Trekkers group is leading a series of hikes from Motorcycle Hill up through the Madera property now in the process of being acquired and into the Hillside Natural Area at 3 p.m. Feb. 6, Feb. 20, March 6 and March 20. The outings of about 90 minutes meet at the corner of Navellier and Blake streets.

Other events coming up include a hike of Albany Hill at 4 p.m. Feb. 2. This is part of a regular series held on the first Sunday of the month. Meet under the digital billboard at the Pacific East Mall on Pierce Street.

Jordan Herrmann will lead an architectural hike of north Berkeley and the UC Berkeley campus at 9:30 a.m. Feb. 2. Meet at Live Oak Park on Shattuck Avenue at the east end of Berryman Street.

Fundraiser benefits Contra Costa Chorale

The community singing chorus Contra Costa Chorale, which just started rehearsals for its spring concert "New York, New York!" last week, is holding a gala fundraiser from 2 to 4:30 p.m. Feb. 8 at Hillside Church, 1422 Navellier St. in El Cerrito.

Free workshop on Covered California

Family dance event at Community Center

The Family Sweetheart Dance will have pre-Valentine's music, dance games and treats for young people and their families from 6 to 8 p.m. Feb. 8 at the El Cerrito Community Center, 7007 Moeser Lane.

El Cerrito seeks input on smoking regulations

El Cerrito is asking residents to take an online survey at www.el-cerrito.org/smoking on types of regulations desired to protect the public from secondhand smoke.

A workshop will be held 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. Feb. 27 at City Hall, 10890 San Pablo Ave.

Input will be used in drafting an ordinance for consideration next year.
