Rotary Club holding its annual speech contest

The Piedmont-Montclair Rotary Club will host the annual Richard D. King speech contest at noon Friday in the Sequoyah Country Club, 4550 Heafey Road, Oakland.

The contest will be held during the Rotary's weekly meeting. Students from Bishop O'Dowd High School, Holy Names High School and Piedmont High School are expected to participate in the contest, which is held in conjunction with the Greater Bay District Rotary speech competition.

The winner of the Piedmont-Montclair Rotary will receive a cash award as well as being winner of the district competition. For more information, contact Sidney Miller at 530-3361 or 967-3288.

Annual Pinewood Derby scheduled for Saturday

The Girl Scouts annual Pinewood Derby is coming up from 3 to 6 p.m. Saturday at Piedmont Community Church, 400 Highland Ave. in Piedmont.

The Piedmont Cub/Tiger Scout Pinewood Derby will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the church, also on Saturday. Volunteers are needed for registration, judges, pit crew and other work. For more information, call the council office at 510-547-4493.

Center for Arts' schedule for this month unveiled

The Piedmont Center for the Arts is hosting opera and song and quilting events during February at 801 Magnolia Ave. in Piedmont.

East Bay Modern Quilt Guild is holding its third annual quilt show, including some special activities. On Saturday, there is a "needle ceremony" from 12:30 to 1 p.m. where a "memorial service" will be held for spent sewing needles, pins and sewing machines in a Japanese Hari kuyou ceremony celebrating sewing tools and their service.

There is a panel discussion exploring quilts in the public eye from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Saturday.

Sunday will feature a quilting demonstration from noon to 2:30 p.m. Ben Venom and Roderick Kiracofe will lecture from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday. Cost is $5. Sewing Day will be noon to 3 p.m. Feb. 16, with a workshop from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Feb. 23.

Stagebridge Players will spin tales of love lost and found from 4 to 5:30 p.m. Sunday to honor Valentine's Day. Tickets of $10 can be purchased at the door. West Edge Opera will celebrate something sweet with a Valentine's Day concert at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 14, featuring romantic music, followed by wine and chocolates. Cost is $25 for adults, $15 for youth. PAAC Lunar New Year event set for Feb. 15

Celebrate the Year of the Horse in grand fashion with festivities planned for the Lunar New Year.

The Piedmont Asian American Club is hosting the event from 12:30 to 3 p.m. Feb. 15 in the Piedmont Middle School multipurpose room, 760 Magnolia Ave. in Piedmont. Cost is $8 for PAAC members, $10 for nonmembers or $12 at the door. There will be lunar arts and crafts, "lucky" red envelopes for preregistered children and light refreshments.

U.S. National Yo-Yo champion Joseph Harris, who has performed on "America's Got Talent" and "Fox Kids," will entertain. Students of Winnie Wong will perform the Guzheng (Chinese zither).
