Albany places second in NCS girls wrestling

  • The Albany High girls wrestling team finished second with 158 points at the North Coast Section Girls Wrestling Championships on Feb. 16 at Pittsburg. Chanel Chawalit won the 126-pound division with a first-round pin in the championship match. In addition, teammate Nallely Patino had a second-round pin in the 150-pound championship match.

    BOD team manager hits 3-pointer in first game

  • Lucas Cortez, a senior team manager/assistant coach for the Bishop O'Dowd High boys basketball team who battles a heart defect, played in his first high school game on Feb. 14 on Senior Night and hit a 3-pointer in the Dragons' 99-64 win over Berkeley. Cortez suffers from hypoplastic left heart syndrome, a complex and rare heart defect in which the left side of the heart is underdeveloped.

    SJND has an easy time with De Anza

  • The St. Joseph Notre Dame girls basketball team took a 31-13 lead into halftime on its way to a 63-24 victory over De Anza in the first round of the Tri-County Athletic League playoffs on Feb. 14. The Pilots' Mira Love-Sangco led all scorers with 17 points, and teammate Savannah Fisher added 16 points. Alyssa Gable also had five assists for St. Joseph Notre Dame

  • Bishop O'Dowd at Castro Valley, boys basketball, Feb. 21, 7 p.m. -- The Dragons face the rival Trojans before entering the North Coast Section Division III playoffs.

  • Encinal at Piedmont, boys basketball, Feb. 21, 7 p.m. -- Two of the top teams in the West Alameda County Conference-Shoreline Division battle before the North Coast Section playoffs.

  • Chanel Chawalit, Albany girls wrestling -- Chawalit won the 126-pound title at the NCS Girls Wrestling Championships with a pin of Foothill's Camaryn Butler in one minute, 10 seconds of the championship match on Feb. 15.

  • Desire Finnie, Berkeley girls basketball -- The Pacific-bound Finnie scored a game-high 23 points in the Yellowjackets' 49-44 loss to Bishop O'Dowd on Feb. 14.

  • DeJa Johnson-Ford, Alameda girls basketball -- Johnson-Ford scored a game-high 23 points in the Hornets' 61-38 victory over Castro Valley on Feb. 14.

  • Mira Love-Sangco, St. Joseph Notre Dame girls basketball -- Love-Sangco scored a game-high 17 points in the Pilots' 63-24 win over De Anza on Feb. 14 in the first round of the TCAL playoffs.

  • Aisia Robertson, Bishop O'Dowd girls basketball -- Robertson produced a team-high 18 points in the Dragons' 49-44 victory over Berkeley on Feb. 14 that clinched the West Alameda County Conference-Foothill Division title. She also had nine points and eight assists in a 59-30 victory over Piedmont on Feb. 12.

  • Lauren Seyranian, Piedmont girls basketball -- Seyranian produced a game-high 36 points, 10 rebounds and five assists in a 78-51 nonleague victory over St. Vincent de Paul on Feb. 15. She also had 35 points, 13 rebounds and four assists in a 79-41 win over Hayward on Feb. 14, and a team-high 14 points in a 59-30 loss to Bishop O'Dowd on Feb. 12.
