LIVERMORE -- Among Tommy Yozzo's goals for the 2014 wrestling season were to beat De La Salle's Nathan Cervantes, and win gold at the North Coast Section and state tournaments. He's one-third of the way there.
The Amador Valley senior got a takedown with 25 seconds left and held on to Cervantes for a 3-2 victory in the 134-pound championship at the East Bay Athletic League tournament in a matchup of two state-ranked wrestlers.
"I've never been an NCS champ or a state champ, but there's no one in California I can't beat, or stay with," said Yozzo, who was third in the NCS last year after finishing second as a sophomore and seventh as a freshman.
One of those he felt he could beat was Cervantes. The De La Salle senior -- ranked 10th in the state by thecaliforniawrestler.com at 126 pounds -- got the better of Yozzo when they wrestled early in the season. For Yozzo, ranked 11th at 134, this time was his turn.
"We'll be seeded first and second at North Coast," Yozzo said, anticipating a rubber match in the finals next Saturday.
The Spartans sent eight to the finals, coming away with two championships. Donovin Guerrero throttled Michael Bilichik of Foothill 15-0 in the 108-pound final, and David Conte decisioned Tyler Biasatti of Amador Valley 6-2 at 128.
Foothill was in position to make a run at the Spartans with Falcons in the final six bouts. But after back-to-back victories by the Knatt brothers, Troy at 162 and Arthur at 172, the Falcons lost three straight until Kohlton Clark edged California's Gerrick Labre 6-5 in overtime at 287.
Livermore won four individual titles, with Aaron Cortez (122), Jacob Roach ( 154), Cody McNaney (197) and Matthew Neale (222). David Pinto won the 140-pound title for San Ramon Valley. Angel Beltran earned host Granada its lone title, at 147 pounds. Michael McDaniel won the 115-pound title for Monte Vista.
The EBAL featured 13 wrestlers listed in the latest California Wrestler rankings. All won gold except for three Spartans: Cervantes, Jack Walsh and Doug Hooper. Walsh lost 13-6 to Beltran in the 147-pound final. Hooper (140) was held out after being injured in the NCS Duals last Saturday and will apply for hardship entry into the NCS tournament.
The Spartans qualified 11 -- with Hooper pending -- to NCS, Foothill will send nine and Livermore seven.
