Quinn, Reynoso, Raffel-Smith named TCAL-Rock MVP's

  • Albany High School's Patty Quinn and St. Mary's Jasmine Reynoso were named co-Tri County Athletic League-Rock Division girls soccer offensive most valuable players, and the Panthers' Miriam Raffel-Smith were named the defensive most valuable player. Among the first-team members were Ya Davis (Albany), Daisy Aleman and Anna Tong of El Cerrito, and Amanda Mattoon and Ellie Seiwald of St. Joseph Notre Dame. For the all-TCAL-Rock boys team, St. Mary's David Hernandez was named the defensive most valuable player and among the first-team members were Norbu Tenzing of Albany; Luis Moreno, Erick Moreno and Alejandro Moreno of El Cerrito; Aureo Mesquita of St. Mary's and Erick Rodriguez of St. Joseph Notre Dame.

    Oakland Tech girls and boys advance

  • The Oakland Tech High School's girls and boys basketball teams each advanced past the first round of the Oakland Section Playoffs. The boys defeated Skyline 62-45 and the girls beat Fremont 64-22 in the first round. Stanley Arnold led the boys with a game-high 21 points. The girls were led by Nyela Cade, who scored 14 points.

  • North Coast Section basketball championships, March 7-8, TBA -- Among the teams that qualified for the semifinals are the Bishop O'Dowd boys (Division III), the El Cerrito boys (Division III), the St. Joseph Notre Dame boys (Division V), the Berkeley girls (Division I), the Encinal girls (Division III) and the St. Mary's girls (Division IV).

  • Oakland Section girls basketball championship, March 8, TBA -- The top two girls basketball teams from the Oakland Section will meet at Laney College for a shot to claim the championship.

  • St. Mary's at Piedmont, softball, March 7, 3:30 p.m. -- A couple of old rivals play in a nonleague game.

  • California at Bishop O'Dowd, baseball, March 11, 7 p.m. -- A nonleague game between a pair of squads which advanced to the quarterfinals or further in North Coast Section playoff action last year.

  • Tyrell Alcorn, El Cerrito boys basketball -- Alcorn scored a team-high 21 points and also had seven assists and four steals in a 79-64 victory over Pinole Valley in a North Coast Section Division III quarterfinal game on Feb. 28.

  • Casey Roquemore, Berkeley boys basketball -- Roquemore scored a team-high 18 points, including two three-pointers, in an overtime loss to Pittsburg in the first round of the NCS Division I playoffs.

  • Shane Farley, Bishop O'Dowd boys basketball -- Farley scored a game-high 21 points to lead Bishop O'Dowd in a win against Elsie Allen in a North Coast Section Division III playoffs quarterfinal game on Feb. 25.

  • Mia Love-Sangco, St. Joseph Notre Dame girls basketball -- Love-Sangco hit eight three-pointers for 24 points in a 52-20 victory against Chinese Christian in a North Coast Section Division V playoffs quarterfinal game on Feb. 26.

  • Jordan Santa Maria, Encinal boys basketball -- Santa Maria scored a team-high 14 points in a 97-64 loss to Bishop O'Dowd in an NCS Division III playoffs quarterfinal game on Feb. 28.

  • Lauren Seyranian, Piedmont girls basketball -- The UC Davis-bound Seyranian scored 33 points, including five three-pointers, and had 11 rebounds in an NCS Division IV first-round win against Berean Christian on Feb. 26.

  • Chris Wright, Head-Royce boys basketball -- Wright had a game-high 19 points in Head-Royce's 53-41 win over Athenian in the first round of the NCS Division V playoffs on Feb. 26.
