A man gave a controlled substance to his 11-year-old child to hide for him so that he would not be arrested during a traffic stop, Alameda police said.

It happened about 11 p.m. March 21 in the 1700 block of Park Street, where officers learned about the attempt to conceal the substance after discovering the man was on probation and searched him, police said.

Along with arresting the 39-year-old man, police released the child and a sibling, who was also in the vehicle, to their mother.

THURSDAY, MARCH 20

  • DRUNKEN DRIVING -- Police arrested a man, 33, on suspicion of drunken driving after a traffic stop about 1:40 a.m. in the 2100 block of Lincoln Avenue. The man was also driving without a license, police said.

  • MARIJUANA POSSESSION -- A minor concealed merchandise in his backpack and then exited Kohl's at Alameda South Shore Center without paying for the item, police said. The teenager, whom police arrested shortly after 2 p.m., was also in possession of less than one ounce of marijuana, police said.

  • DRUG POSSESSION -- A man whom officers initially detained after he was spotted urinating in public was arrested after he was found in possession of suspected cocaine, police said. It happened about 11:35 p.m. in the 1400 block of Park Avenue,

  • CHILD ABUSE -- A 35-year-old Alameda man faces child abuse charges after he admitted hitting his daughter with a belt and pulling her hair, leaving her with visible injuries, police said. Police said they began investigating the case after the girl arrived at school with a bruise on her face. The girl later revealed that she had been in a physical altercation with her parents, and that her father had struck her, according to investigators. The man was arrested about 11:25 a.m. on Alameda Avenue.

  • ASSAULT -- A man, 48, was arrested on multiple charges after he allegedly stole items from Kohl's at Alameda South Shore Center, then struck a security guard on the face with a pair of scissors as he was being detained, police said. It happened about 6:10 p.m. Along with robbery, the man was booked on charges of assault and violating his probation. He was also wanted on an outstanding felony warrant that was issued after he failed to make a court date in a separate case.

  • PROBATION VIOLATION -- A traffic stop in the 1600 block of Fifth Street about 10:50 p.m. led to the arrest of a 23-year-old man after a background check revealed that he was on probation for human trafficking, and that he was in violation of his probation because he was out after 10 p.m., police said.

    SATURDAY, MARCH 22

  • DRUG PARAPHERNALIA -- A cyclist, 46, whom an officer detained for riding a bicycle at night without a front light, was arrested after a background check revealed that he was wanted on an outstanding misdemeanor warrant. An officer also found a methamphetamine pipe while searching the man during the arrest, which occurred at 1:50 a.m. at Fernside Boulevard and Versailles Avenue. Another man, 25, was arrested about 12:15 p.m. in the 1900 block of Webster Street, where he was allegedly found carrying drug paraphernalia. The man was also in possession of less than one ounce of marijuana and was wanted on an outstanding felony warrant.

  • DRUNKEN DRIVING -- Police arrested a 33-year-old man on suspicion of drunken driving following a traffic stop about 1:45 a.m. at 29th and Glasscock streets in Oakland near the Park Street Bridge. A woman, 51, was also arrested on suspicion of drunken driving at 9:35 p.m. after she was involved in a traffic collision at Encinal and Versailles avenue, police said.

  • MARIJUANA POSSESSION -- Two men, ages 18 and 21, were each cited for possessing less than one ounce of marijuana about 9:15 p.m. after officers contacted them as suspicious persons in Jackson Park, police said.

  • PETTY THEFT -- A man, 25, who stole alcohol from a business in the 1600 block of Park Street was arrested just before 2 a.m., police said. The man, who stepped behind a counter to get the bottles, was drunk when he was arrested, police said.

    SUNDAY, MARCH 23

  • BURGLARY -- A burglar shattered a glass door before entering a residence in the 600 block of Pond Isle. Though the burglar moved items inside the residence, no property was stolen, police said. The break-in was reported about 1:35 p.m.

  • DRUNKEN DRIVING -- Police arrested a man, 40, on suspicion of drunken driving after officers received a report that he was possibly intoxicated. The man allegedly failed field sobriety tests before police arrested him about 8:45 p.m. at Buena Vista Avenue and Sherman Street.
