An Oakland man suspected of trespassing was nabbed by police and subsequently held in connection with a home burglary earlier this year, Alameda police said.

Shortly before 4:35 p.m. April 3, a homeowner in the 1000 block of Mound Street in Alameda called 911 to report that he had confronted a man on his property, police Lt. Jill Ottaviano said.

When challenged, the suspect ran off, got into a car and drove away, police said. The homeowner gave a detailed description of the vehicle and the suspect, later identified as 48-year-old Frederick Smith, Ottaviano said.

Officers found the unoccupied car nearby, and after a five-hour stakeout, Smith returned to the vehicle and was arrested, police said. Police said the suspect's description was similar to that of someone wanted in connection with a home burglary that occurred about 5:15 p.m. Feb. 22.

During that incident police said home surveillance cameras captured images of the suspect, who stole money, a cellphone and car keys from a house in the 3000 block of Madison Street.

When questioned, Smith allegedly admitted carrying out the Feb. 22 burglary. He was booked into Glen E. Dyer Jail in Oakland on suspicion of trespassing and burglary.
