PLEASANTON -- Learn basic disaster preparedness from members of the Livermore-Pleasanton Fire Department with free Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) training classes.

The classes will be held 6 to 9:30 p.m. Wednesdays from May 7 to June 11 at the fire training tower at the city of Pleasanton's operations service center, 3333 Busch Road.

Classes will include classroom and hands-on instruction on basic responses related to fire safety, disaster medical operations, light search and rescue, and terrorism. The six-week program also covers disaster psychology. The class will end with a multi-casualty drill to test the skills learned by participants.

"When a disaster such as a major earthquake strikes, the emergency responders will be focused on the most critical emergencies," Fire Chief James Miguel said in a release. "Fortunately, there are many things that residents can do to help themselves, their families, and the community around them, leading up to and following a disaster."
