PHS, PMS jazz bands to perform at Yoshi's

The Piedmont High School and Piedmont Middle School jazz bands will perform two benefit concerts at 7 and 9 p.m. May 26 at Yoshi's jazz club at Jack London Square in Oakland.

LWV invites all residents to become members

The League of Women Voters of Piedmont invites all residents to join the League, a nonpartisan political organization that encourages active and informed participation in government.

The League holds numerous informative meetings on regional and statewide topics during the year. It also hosts election forums on Piedmont ballot measures and local races.

PUSD holding Service-Learning Day on May 23

Piedmont Unified School District is holding a Service-Learning Day from 9 a.m. to noon on May 23 at Piedmont High.

Parent volunteers will be assisting with the event in various classrooms for ninth through 12th grades. Teachers and students have developed areas and projects they are tackling this year. Those include solar ovens and water purification for ninth-graders, discrimination issues for 10th-graders, a drive to support teens in homeless shelters for 11th-graders and economic disparity and mapping of resources for 12th-graders. Beach Elementary's chess tourney June 7

Queens and pawns, knights and castles all come into play at the kindergarten through fifth grade chess tournament to be held 9 a.m. to noon June 7 at Beach Elementary School, 100 Lake Ave.

PHS annual a cappella revue May 30-June 1

Piedmont High presents its annual a cappella revue May 30 through June 1 at Alan Harvey Theater on the high school campus.

Concerts feature contemporary hits from U2 and One Direction, and artists Stevie Wonder, Eric Clapton, David Bowie and more. The May 30 and 31 concerts are at 8 p.m. June 1 concerts are at 2 and 7 p.m. Tickets are $15 adult and $10 student/senior, or $30 reserved seat.
