DANVILLE -- San Ramon Valley High has offered its boys basketball coaching job to Brian Botteen after the school's original choice withdrew his name from consideration, a district spokesperson confirmed Thursday.
Botteen, who coached the Wolves' junior varsity for seven seasons, was originally passed over for the position in favor of Frank Borghi.
But Borghi, a former girls coach at James Logan, withdrew this week after students and their families made it clear they wanted Botteen as their coach. A crowd gathered at the school's cafeteria on Tuesday night to voice their support for Botteen and discuss the hiring process with the school's administration.
The district spokesperson pointed to the "negative attention" the situation has received as Borghi's reason for stepping away from consideration for the job.
Botteen's name will be brought forward for the school district's approval at its May 20 board meeting.
