PLEASANTON -- Amador Valley High goalie Allie DaCar was hoarse but happy Thursday night.
The host Dons notched an immensely satisfying 8-6 win over three-time defending champion Carondelet in the North Coast Section Division I girls lacrosse championship game.
It was mission accomplished for a strong cast of Dons seniors who had lost to the Cougars the past two seasons in the section finals.
DaCar had four clutch saves and collected a groundball. Carondelet's Corine Lafayette scored all six of her team's goals, but the balanced Dons held on after holding five-goal leads three times, 5-0, 7-2 and 8-3. Andrea Arden, Evan Murphy and Jackie Gilbert led Amador Valley (22-1), the No. 1 seed, with two goals apiece, and Gilbert had seven draw controls.
Amador Valley, which won the program's second section title, held off the surging No. 2 seeded Cougars (14-6) over the final few minutes. Lafayette scored back-to-back goals to cut it to 8-6 with 1:49 remaining, but the Dons were able to essentially run out the clock.
The Dons dominated the 10 minutes of the match, holding possession and leading 5-0 en route to a 7-3 halftime margin. The first three goals came on free shots.
Carondelet, which did not have an offensive possession until nearly 10 minutes had elapsed, surged late in the half on a natural hat trick by Lafayette.
But the Dons upped the margin to five again on Gilbert's goal early in the second half as she fought through a double-team.
Amador Valley beat the Cougars 7-6 in five overtimes in East Bay Athletic League title.
Cambi Cukar and Murphy both scored in the first half, but Cukar had a shot blocked on a free shot at the halftime buzzer.
