PLEASANT HILL -- A two-run triple from Joe DeMers and a two-run double by Ethan Cook provided more than enough support for Chris Brown, who pitched six scoreless innings as the host College Park High baseball team drubbed Montgomery 9-0 on Wednesday to advance to the North Coast Section Division II baseball championship.
The No. 2-seeded Falcons (26-3) will face Marin Catholic on Saturday at 4 p.m. at Diablo Valley College, trying to win just their second NCS title and first since 2008.
"We prepare for every team like they're the best they are so we can have the best opportunities for ourselves," said Brown, who struck out four and walked one.
The Vikings (19-8) had advanced on the strength of a combined no-hitter in the quarterfinal round, but DeMers put the possibility of a repeat to bed early. DeMers tripled off the fence in left-center to drive in Scott Hroza, who was hit by a pitch, and Trevor Larnach, who singled, for a 2-0 lead with one out in the first inning. DeMers scored when Brendon Chellew's fly ball to center was dropped.
The Falcons added three more runs in the fifth inning, two on Cook's double, and three in the sixth.
Brown struggled briefly in the fifth inning, hitting Nick Smith and walking Rylan Kobre -- the bottom of Montgomery's lineup -- with one out. But he got Matt Miller to ground out to first, then got Zac Merrikan, who hit .485 during the regular season, to fly to center.
"I had a little cutter that nicked the batter's foot then kind of lost my rhythm through the second batter, but I was able to regain it," said Brown, who raised his record to 11-1.
No. 2 College Park is the only one of top four seeds remaining in a topsy-turvy bracket. Montgomery was seeded 11th, and fifth-seeded Marin Catholic beat a No. 8 in its semifinal victory over Washington.
