Headline: "Have You Played the County's New Numbers Game? This One Pays Off in the Thousands"

Ever hear of 15,520 Entrada Drive, Pleasanton? Or try this one: 30,981 Mitchell Court, Livermore.

That's the way your address will read if the two Valley cities go along with the rest of the South County in "a plan for house numbers uniformity."

It works like this: the county (which from all indications is fast running out of more important things to do) has hired a bunch of experts to change all the house numbers and business house numbers from San Leandro to Fremont, and from the mud flats of Hayward (college sites, that is) to the hills of Altamont.

The Southern Pacific Railway (for which no one has had a sensible suggestion in years) will provide the dividing lines: Using the SP main lines as it crosses the San Leandro-to-Fremont terrain as a north-south divider, these planners just start out numbering like crazy in a wonderful eastern sweep.

Any other nitwit can plainly see that by the time they get to Pleasanton, the numbers will have reached 15,000 or more; the planners agree, and so all the Pleasanton numbers will be prefixed by 15,000.

Allowing for a lot of homes in the gravel pits, the system will have climbed to 30,000 once Livermore is reached, sooo ... we have 30,981 Mitchell Court, etc., etc. When you get to the Altamont, it will be 44,646 Windy Gulch Lane, or sumpin' like that. Put it all together, and what have you got?

Just another expansion of the Oakland city limits, it looks to us. What's wrong with the old system of each town depending in its singular numbering system? Well, it was confusing to the Teamsters (who are underpaid, as we all know) and disconcerting to the Postal Department (which is trying to save money like mad.)

Like we say, the supervisors are down to their last prison farm, and they've practically zoned every available acre in the county ... or bought it for horse racing. If you have any suggestions to occupy county crews, and spend idle tax dollars, we suggest you write the County Court House, Number 0000, care of the SP main line.

Real Estate: Dublin Realty. Palomeras -- someday this could be another Piedmont. 200 acres, Highway 50 and Palomeras Road. $225 per acre, several springs, a fine long-term investment.

Groceries: Hagstrom's, Pleasanton. Frozen food bargain spree -- flaked beef steaks, three for $1.89; Rite's frozen rolls, 39 cents; Ocoma Frozen fryers, 95 cents for a 12-ounce package.

Answer to last week's trivia question: On Aug. 3, 1958, the Billboard Hot 100 began.
