Traffic was flowing Tuesday morning over the new eastern span of the Bay Bridge as commuters got a first up-close glimpse of the span's signature 525-foot tower.

Traffic sluggish sometimes, but BART ridership 3rd highest in system history as commuters take heed and find alternate routes to get around Bay Bridge closure. The bridge experienced a different kind of congestion Friday as workers scurried from one end to the other, prepping the new span and doing maintenance on the western side.

The second full day of construction realigning Interstate 80 with the new Bay Bridge at Yerba Buena Island and Oakland is on schedule. Meanwhile, Caltrans takes advantage of the closure and performs maintenance on the west span in a few days that would have otherwise taken months.

The beloved Bay Bridge troll will be saved when the 1936 span is demolished over the next three years, bridge officials promise. But will the 18-inch steel sculpture retire to a museum or move onto the new bridge next door? The bridge community is split on the question. The troll manual is missing. And history offers conflicting clues.  
 
 

 

Somewhere around 8 p.m. on Wednesday the last car will traverse the eastern span of the Bay Bridge before it is once again closed to traffic on a Labor Day weekend.
