NEWARK -- An attempt to serve a warrant here at a motel turned into an extended standoff situation that involved SWAT team officers Sunday morning.

Police responded to the Motel 6 in the 5600 block of Mowry Avenue around 8:18 a.m. to assist California Highway Patrol officers with a warrant for a violent crime, according to a Newark police news release.

Officers made contact with the man in a motel room, but he refused to surrender.

After several failed negotiations, Newark and Union City SWAT teams were activated. The man later surrendered peacefully to the SWAT officers.

Since the investigation in ongoing, police said they are not releasing the man's name.
