A family brawl with clubs and pipes that erupted on an out-of-town visit ended when Houston police shot and killed a Newark man who attacked his father and two brothers with a knife and hit his sister, police said.

Labaran Idakoji, 26, of Newark, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police said the man and his family were visiting his sister, Bilkisu Idakoji, 31, at her home in the 1500 block of Nagle Street in Houston on Thursday afternoon when he hit her in the face. She received minor injuries, police said.

Family members separated the two and spent the next several hours attempting to calm the man, police said.

Later that evening, family members started to leave and believed the fight had been resolved. But police said Labaran Idakoji pulled out a knife and stabbed his 62-year-old father, Abukar Idakoji, and brother Ibraham Idakoji, 29. Both men received multiple stab wounds and were transported to local hospitals in critical condition, police said.

Labaran Idakoji also attacked a second brother with the knife and cut his face. That brother, 32-year-old Newark resident Idris Idakoji, was treated at the scene.

Family members stepped in and tried to disarm Labaran Idakoji by using a large piece of lumber as a weapon, police said.

When two Houston police officers arrived about 11:45 p.m., they found family members fighting with clubs, pipes and other weapons. The officers ordered everyone to stop fighting and to get on the ground.

Labaran Idakoji, still armed with a knife, refused, police said. One officer repeatedly ordered him to drop the knife, but he refused and advanced toward the officers. The officers, fearing for their safety, shot him.

Police were not seriously injured. The case is being investigated by the Houston police homicide unit and the internal affairs division at the Harris County District Attorney's Office.
