NEWARK -- Police arrested a robbery suspect Friday afternoon after he reportedly held up a pawnshop shortly before in the day.

Officer responded to a 3:42 p.m. call at Greenback Pawnshop at 7102 Thornton Ave. for a report of an armed robbery, said Cmdr. Mike Carroll.

Police received information regarding the suspect and a vehicle description, then spotted the vehicle along northbound Interstate 880 approaching Decoto Road, Carroll said.

Officers attempted to stop the vehicle, but it failed to yield to the emergency lights and sirens, Carroll said. The vehicle slowed down just north of the Decoto Road exit and a man jumped from the moving vehicle, climbed over a fence that borders the freeway, and ran into a Fremont neighborhood.

Police setup a perimeter of the area and a helicopter from East Bay Regional Park Police helped in the search. During a search of a backyard on Santee Road, a 26-year-old man was apprehended and arrested.

Police did not release the man's name.
