NEWARK -- New Cougars coach Ralph Meredith got his first victory in rather empathetic fashion.
After a 38-6 drubbing at the hands of Dougherty Valley last week in the home opener, the Cougars (1-1), with three first-quarter touchdowns from running back Franco Nepal, simply manhandled the Dons (0-2) in their second home game.
The Cougars ran up a 36-6 lead in the first quarter. Nepal ran 52 yards on the first play from scrimmage and then, after a Dons fumble, ran 15 yards on their second play.
Marty Leggett ran 16 yards for the third Newark touchdown and Nepal ran 23 yards for another score with 6:12 left in the quarter. Quarterback Adriano Arroyo threw a 20-yard touchdown pass to King Slocum to complete the Cougars' first-quarter touchdown barrage.
