Oakland — A 30-year-old downtown store clerk, shot last week during a robbery in which he and two customers held a suspect for police, fought with and detained a man suspected of burglarizing a car outside the store Wednesday night.

The incident left shattered the front glass door to the Gourmet Market at 1549 Jackson St.

The suspect ran into the store about 9:14 p.m. Wednesday where the clerk, who still carries a bullet in his neck from the March 19 robbery-shooting, was working. The clerk locked the door and fought with and held the suspect until police arrived.

The clerk was not at the store Thursday morning. His uncle, who owns the store, tried to downplay the incident, repeatedly saying nothing happened when asked by a reporter to provide details.

In the March 19 robbery, two men with guns came into the store to rob it. The clerk and two customers fought with one of the suspects and were shot by him and the accomplice who escaped with some cash, authorities said. The suspect detained March 19 was hit with a dumbbell by the clerk during the fight.
