The Contra Costa County Sheriff's office and district attorneys are continuing to investigate the unrelated deaths of two inmates Saturday.
Spokesman Jimmy Lee identified a 44-year-old Walnut Creek man who died at the Contra Costa Regional Medical Center in Martinez as Maurice Moyal. He had been taken from the Martinez Detention Facility to the hospital Wednesday night, after appearing to have a seizure.
Moyal had been in custody since May 2008 on a robbery charge. He was pronounced dead at 8:30 a.m. Saturday.
Richard New, a 45-year-old Richmond resident, was found unconscious about 8:14 a.m. Saturday in his cell in Richmond by a nurse making rounds to administer medication. After medical staff and paramedics attempted to revive him, New was pronounced dead at 8:48 a.m.
New had been arrested on suspicion of failure to appear. His death is being investigated according to the county's officer-involved fatal incident protocol.
Autopsies have been scheduled for both men, according to Lee.
