PITTSBURG — Through a chance coincidence, police have identified the victim of a Tuesday fatal shooting near a city park.

Pittsburg police found the body of Benjamin Merrill, 22, of San Francisco, at Marina Walk Park on Sixth Street about 3 a.m. Tuesday. Officers initially did not find any identification.

One of Merrill's family members was in court in San Francisco today, and happened to see an officer holding the sketch of the Pittsburg homicide victim and positively identified him, Pittsburg police Lt. Brian Addington said.

One person reported hearing shots and a car speeding away at the time of the crime, but police have not found anyone who saw the shooting or the assailants.

Investigators are now speaking with Merrill's co-workers, family members and friends, hoping to find out what he was doing in Pittsburg at 3 a.m. Tuesday.

Merrill had no criminal background and had never been arrested, Addington said. He was not reported missing.

"We don't know the circumstances yet, but (the homicide) is pretty unusual," he said.
