OAKLAND -- A 16-year-old boy was shot to death Saturday night in East Oakland, authorities said.
Authorities said Deaddrian Chapman was shot about 10:45 p.m. in the 2600 block of Ritchie Street near Sunnyside Street. He was pronounced dead at Highland Hospital at 10:55 p.m.
Police said the youth, who lived in another part of East Oakland, may have just left a party in the area and was on a bicycle when he was confronted by someone who shot him.
Dozens of friends and family members gathered near Chapman's home Sunday, many of them sharing hugs and tears over their fallen loved one. Most said they did not want to talk about him in the press, but remembered his love for basketball and skill at cracking jokes.
"He's 16. Kids get in trouble. Kids try to be good," said Nicole Jackson, Chapman's older cousin. Deaddrian was raised with a younger brother and two cousins with whom he was extremely close, she added.
"He was a good kid, and he will be loved," Jackson said.
Police are unsure of the motive and no arrests have been made.
The killing was Oakland's 69th homicide of the year. Last year at this time there were 94 homicides in the city.
Police and Crime Stoppers of Oakland are offering up to $10,000 in reward money for information leading to the arrest of the killer. Anyone with information can call police at 510-238-3821 or Crime Stoppers at 510-777-8572 or 510-777-3211.
