A severely abused 3-year-old Campbell girl and her mother were found Wednesday night in San Jose after a brief and desperate search, and authorities were still looking for the woman's ex-boyfriend, who they believe disappeared with them.

The mother, Jane Marin, 31, was arrested and will face felony child abuse charges, Campbell police Capt. Dave Carmichael said. The girl was being examined at a hospital after being driven there by a police officer. She was in the custody of police and Child Protective Services.

Carmichael said police had earlier in the day obtained evidence that the child was the victim of severe abuse. But, he said, he could not release any details at the time for fear of jeopardizing the case.

In response to a phone call Tuesday, Campbell police conducted a welfare check at 2:30 p.m. at an apartment at 1300 Pollard Road, only to find that no one was home. The search for Marin, the girl and the mother's ex-boyfriend, George Rodriguez, began immediately. Shortly after 8 p.m., officers found Marin and her daughter in the parking lot of the shopping center at Santa Teresa Boulevard and Bernal Road in South San Jose, Carmichael said.

"It is absolutely a relief to know that she's safe, and nobody was going to rest until we made sure that happened," Carmichael said.

Officers were still looking for Rodriguez as of Wednesday night and believe he is likely in San Jose. Anyone with information is asked to call the police immediately at 408-866-2101.
