The owners of two restaurants and a hair salon in West Contra Costa were named Woman Entrepreneur of the Year for 2011 late last year.
They are Shellie Bourgault, owner of Hidden City Cafe in Richmond; Maya Parker, owner of Joyance Salon and Barbering in Richmond; and Tina Holtzclaw, owner of Tina's Place in Pinole.
The trio is among 44 women entrepreneurs in the Bay Area to receive the annual award for last year. Honorees distinguished themselves in a variety of ways, such as mentoring others, leading by example, innovating within their industries and stimulating the local economy, according to the website of Women's Initiative at www.womensinitiative.org. The nationwide group provides microenterprise training and funding support to low-income women to start their own businesses and become economically self-sufficient.
