A southbound stretch in the 7200 block of Oakport Street will be closed to cars until the end of March while PG&E crews inspect underground gas pipelines.

Workers shut off Oakport Street to traffic going south near the I-880 exit at 66th Avenue after excavating a large pit in front of the Coliseum Lexus dealership there to allow them access to the transmission lines. The northbound lane of the road that runs parallel to I-880 is still open to cars. But vehicles trying to go south are advised to take the Hegenberger Road exit from I-880 in order to approach businesses along Oakport Street. PG&E dug similar pits near Coral and Tunis roads, as well as Oakport Street adjacent to I-880. Crews will excavate two other pits including one at 50th Avenue and Coliseum Way.

Customers can call 1-800-PGE-5000 for more information or attend an open house from noon until 7 p.m. Wednesday at 1755 Embarcadero in Oakland.
