SAN FRANCISCO -- An Ethiopian woman was the first to cross the finish line Sunday at the 101st annual Zazzle Bay to Breakers foot race in San Francisco.
Mamito Daska, 28, won the overall race with a time of 39 minutes and 2.4 seconds, race organizers said. Daska had placed second among women runners last year and third in 2010.
The man with the best race time was 25-year-old Sammy Kitwara, of Kenya, who finished at 34:40.5. Kitwara set the 12K course record in 2009, and also holds the world record, according to the Bay to Breakers.
In 2006, race organizers instituted an "equalizer," starting the elite women athletes ahead of the men, based on the average difference between each division's course records. This year, the women's elite field started the race about 4 minutes and 30 seconds before the men.
Organizers estimated more than 50,000 participants in this year's race.
