UNION CITY -- A woman died when she was hit by a train in the Decoto district Tuesday evening, police said.

Authorities responded to a 6:28 p.m. report that a woman was walking on tracks between H Street and Decoto Road when she was struck by a Capitol Corridor train, Union City police Cmdr. Ben Horner said.

The woman, who has not yet been identified, was pronounced dead at the scene, an Alameda County Coroner's Bureau official said. Authorities said they have not yet determined why the woman was on the tracks.

The train, which was carrying 95 passengers, was headed from Sacramento to San Jose, Capitol Corridor spokeswoman Luna Salaver said. No passengers or train crew members were injured.

Transit officials provided alternate transportation, including tour buses and taxi cabs, to allow passengers to complete their commutes, Salaver said.

The train was delayed for 90 minutes before it was taken out of service, transit officials said

The fatality prompted all trains in the area to use the same track, causing delays for about three hours, transit officials said.
