The Route 238 Corridor project in Hayward is adding some high-tech features to make the roads more bike- and pedestrian-friendly and increase energy efficiency.
Traffic signals will have video cameras that can change traffic lights when a vehicle -- or pedestrian or bicyclist -- is detected at the intersection. This will especially help bicyclists and light motorcycles, who often cannot trip traditional traffic sensors, plus improve traffic flow.
Streetlights will have energy-efficient LED lights that can be dimmed when there is less vehicle and pedestrian traffic, such as early morning hours, saving even more energy.
